    Feedback on Boogie Woogie Stomp

    in Get Feedback on Progress

    Hi Arthur,

Here is a link to a video of me attempting to play Boogie Woogie Stomp. As you will see it’s still a work in progress but I would appreciate any feedback and tips to help me improve.

    Many thanks,

    Dean

Hey Dean! The recording is good! I appreciate you taking the time to do it.

It's really close! The main thing I see is to just tighten up the breaks so you don’t slow down or lose steam during them.

Each break should take exactly 4 bars. When I was a kid I would sometimes ask my mom to hold the metronome (Mom had no musical training, but she was a good sport lol) and count out loud with the click "1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4" etc while I played the break. It was too hard for me at that time to keep track of the quarter notes while playing the rhythms of the break. However, by hearing someone else's voice counting the beats I was able to keep track of them and gradually adjust things so that I came back in on the IV chord after the break at exactly 4 measures later.

It took probably a couple weeks of doing it like this until I could 'hear' the timing in my own head.

I really enjoyed how you didn’t stop when you made a “mistake”. There were some hesitations but I think you can iron those out just by doing them over and over and becoming more familiar with those parts.

Keep up the great work Dean and thanks for sharing! Hopefully others will do the same with the songs they are working on.

Thanks Arthur, that’s really helpful. I’ll work on the timing and I’m sure I’ll have plenty more practice of playing on after mistakes!😂
